Can I transplant my pussy willow tree from its container now, late May/early June? #870672

Asked May 29, 2024, 10:07 PM EDT

As I have elected to populate an area of my yard as an "Angels' " garden in honor and memorial to lost loved ones and their families, and in tribute/honor to a close recently late relative...  I purchased a pussy willow in an approximately 5 gall container from a local nursery. A bit of research, tells me fall is a better time to plant.  What special attention should I give this tree to help protect its long-term health and survival?  I will be planting it in Greene County NC .

It is true that fall is the preferred time to plant a tree.  Cooler temperatures reduce stress on the plant and spur it to develop a good root structure.  Your planting hole should be 3 times wider than the tree's root ball but no deeper than the root ball itself.  You can plant now but you need to be sure that the tree receives adequate water on a regular basis and  mulch after planting.  Mulch helps to hold moisture and  moderate soil temperatures.  Keep mulch at least 12 inches away from the trunk and no more than 4" deep.  The link below will provide additional information.
