Sudden webbing and orange brown dying of branches on a healthy evergreen tree. in Lake Township Huron County. #870657

Asked May 29, 2024, 7:59 PM EDT

In four days our evergreen tree suffered a torched look on one sixth of the tree. There is subtle  webbing on the tree, especially on the area that looks torched, and now dead. What should I do to save the trees and many around it? No neighbors here seen this ever before.

Expert Response

If you see webbing similar to the photo on this link, it would be Eastern tent caterpillar or a related tent caterpillar species. There aren't great options for treating these caterpillars beyond pruning out affected areas of webbing. In terms of protection, trees that are in decline benefit from a fall or spring (too late now) fertilizer application and being watered in periods of drought.

If you're able to send a photo of the webbing, that would be helpful to determine if it's a tent caterpillar or another cause.

I have a few pictures that I took. I don't know how to send them to your complicated email and extension number. If I had a phone/text  number, I could text you the pictures.

The tree service who removed pines from the lot a couple of weeks ago, came back to look at this evergreen. He said their truck's exhaust scorched the tree. The webbing is all from spiders. No caterpillar tents were seen. No spraying is advised at this time. Thank you for all of your help. If things deteriorate, I will contact you again. May God bless your effort, and you.
