Sunflower leaf black spots #870654

Asked May 29, 2024, 7:49 PM EDT

Hello - A couple of weeks ago I planted some sunflower seedlings and I am now noticing black spots on some of the leaves. Can you tell me what this is and whether I should be concerned that it will spread to other plants? They are in beds with eggplant, summer squash, and pepper plants. I also have some sunflowers spouting from seeds in the same bed - is there a concern this will spread to the new sunflower plants nearby? Should I pull the affected plants? Thanks for your help!

Expert Response

Thank you for your question, Anne.  I believe the problem with your plant's leaves are caused by aphids, which live on the underside of the leaf, and suck the carbohydrates out of the cells, leaving this "crinkled" effect.  This Extension article has information about the pest, as well as control recommendations:  https://hgic.clemson.edu/factsheet/integrated-pest-management-i-p-m-for-aphids/

If not controlled, aphids can and will become pests of other plants in your garden, so getting rid of them early is the best course.  Once you have eliminated them, consider placing a water- , light- and air-permeable cover over your plants, so keep new ones out.  Good luck!
