When should I reseed a grub damaged lawn? #870633
Asked May 29, 2024, 4:54 PM EDT
Hi, I have identified grub damage in my lawn. A landscaping company sprayed Acelepryn grub preventative on 5/15 (almost 2 weeks ago). When should I plan to plant grass seed on the damaged area to get the best results (e.g. if the grubs will remain active until the end of the summer, I don't want them to destroy the new grass!) Thank you!

The grub control product that was applied to your lawn contained the active ingredient chlorantraniliprole. It did not have any effect in May as the spring grubs were pupating but will work on newly hatched grubs in August.

You can seed in late August, the best time of year to do so because: temperatures abate, fall rains bring moisture and there is less weed competition with grass seedlings. More info on lawn rejuvenation in the following links:

I'd suggest doing a soil test (now) if one hasn't been done in 2 years. You will learn about your soil including soil type, pH, nutrient levels and more. Knowing the type and fertility of your soil is the starting point to establishing & maintaining a strong turf that can resist diseases, moss, weeds, insects/grubs and look great at an optimal cost.
