Alpine Forget me not issue #870630

Asked May 29, 2024, 4:37 PM EDT

Hi, I planted some alpine forget-me-not seeds in a new flower bed that I made as a memorial garden. (They are for my brother). I remember reading the seed packet and it said to thin out the plants once they came up, which I tried to do. I had a few clumps. This year they seem to have overtaken the garden. Besides the bigger plants in the pictures, there are tons of new small plants covering underneath. I really did not want them to take over the garden, as I have other things planted. Is it too late? Do they spread from seeds in the flowers? Do you have any suggestions how I can keep them to a few small clumps? I am worried they are going to be like a weed I have to pull all the time. What will happen if I just leave them to do what comes naturally, I'm wondering if they will die out or just spread more? Thanks for whatever information you send. I feel silly that it doesn't seem like I planned well.

Hi Aline,
First off, I'll say that your bed looks lovely! That said, yes, forget-me-nots can spread easily. You can remove them as they spread beyond the bed you want them in, dig them out or clip as they come up. If the whole area is well watered they could continue to spread.
You could use an herbicide if you wanted but that may be excessive. Happy to chat on the phone as well if you would like.
