Safety of Round Up in a home garden. #870604

Can Round Up be safely used in a home garden? If so, how far away from vegetable and fruit plants can it safely be sprayed?

Expert Response

Hi Sharon, thanks for the question.

"Roundup" products are not all the same.  The Roundup products with the systemic glyphosate (e.g. Roundup Weed and Grass Killer) can be used safely in the garden when used according to the label.  Be wary of products that have other active ingredients that may not be as friendly to neighboring plants.  It would be a good idea to stay far enough away to avoid getting on non-targeted plants. The product does not necessarily need to be sprayed.  It can be wiped on or brushed on the target weeds to avoid contacting non-targeted plants.  You can use shield (e.g. cardboard) to protect plants. A milk jug with the bottom cut off. Place it over the target and spray. Be sure to read the label and remember that "the label is the law". Be sure to wear the appropriate PPE.

I hope this helps.
