Relocating bumblebees #870602

Asked May 29, 2024, 2:08 PM EDT

I have discovered a bumblebee nest in my irrigation valve box. The in-ground box opening is too small, and the box too deep, to attempt relocating the nest. I'm seeking recommendations on how I can encourage them to leave. Thanks!

Expert Response

What a dilemma. Removing a bumble colony typically results in damaging the nest, so removal is typically destruction. But bumble bee nests naturally collapse in by the end of summer. One species (with an orange band) is already on its way out and the nests should be done by July. If you can hold off until then, the bees will be able to complete their life cycle (at which time the colony will die out naturally). Otherwise, you may need to call a pest control professional.

Thank you for the info, Andony.  I really needed to get my irrigation system turned on, so my husband “suited up” and reached into the box long enough to get the valve turned on. Brave guy! The bees were quite agitated by this, but he was only stung once, on the ankle.  We promptly replaced the valve box cover and the bees settled down.  They are welcome to remain there rent free for the summer, but hopefully by late fall/early winter, the colony will collapse and I can reclaim the valve box

Thanks again for your input!
