water new serviceberry w/ "tree bag" #870596

Asked May 29, 2024, 1:32 PM EDT

Hello, We recently had a local nursery plant a large multi-trunked serviceberry for us. They didn't have the "tree bag" of the right size, and returned when we were not home to bring one. It lays flat on the ground around the base of the shrub, and can be filled with a hose. Looks like a doughnut. The instructions were to fill it, and when it is flat (water having seeped into the ground), to fill it again. They was no information on how often (once a day? 12 times a day? once a week?) to fill it, and how long the bag is to be in use. My husband has refilled it multiple times, and the appears ground is saturated, so we are concerned we will kill the shrub. We have a small water meter probe, about 8 inches, which also indicates saturated ground, We've removed the bag and need help. Thanks!!!

Expert Response

Hi,
Thanks for your question about how to water your newly planted tree.  Have you called the nursery that you bought the plant from and asked them how they recommend using the tree bag?  Many nurseries warranty their trees so you would want to follow their instructions for watering the new tree.

Here are links to resources that may help.  There are guides to how much to water based on size of trunk.

I hope this is helpful and that you get many years of pleasure having the new tree.
