home compost #870590

Asked May 29, 2024, 12:52 PM EDT

Hello - Today I discovered sprouts covering the entire surface of my compost pile, the roots going all go all the way to the bottom, forming a mesh throughout the pile. The roots hold onto the soil very well. I am pretty sure that these are either corn or barley sprouts, the result of my throwing old popcorn and barley seeds in my compost about a month ago. I guess I thought these seeds were dead (which was really dumb because I had bought the barley seeds to sprout them, albeit something over 1/2 year ago). I have two questions: 1) Are these corn or barley sprouts? Or maybe something else? 2) Other than throwing the compost in the green bin, can I rescue this pile, perhaps leaving it in the sun to "bake"? I am thinking of how rye grass can be turned under and can actually improve soil. Thanks as always.

We think that the base of the sprout looks most like corn.
You don't need to remove the compost. Just disrupt the area as much as you can and rake/sift out what seedlings you can. (These you could lay in the sun if you like.) You will likely need to repeat but it's not a problem.
It too will compost.

Dear Christine - My, that was fast!  It looked like corn to me, too.  I don't remember it popping that fast!  Maybe I should have kept it.

Glad to hear that it is OK to keep the compost.  I am plenty willing to keep disrupting the pile.

Thanks a whole bunch.

- Jim
