Dying Tomato Plants #870579

Asked May 29, 2024, 12:23 PM EDT

Hi there, I have some sun gold cherry tomatoes that I planted a few weeks ago, and they are not doing well. (They seems stunted and weak with discoloration and holes in some of the leaves.) I've never experienced this issue and was wondering if you might be able to take a look at my photos and see what is wrong with them? (The soil is moist but not wet and they get adequate sun. I also amended the bed with alpaca poo in the early winter.) Thank you so much :)

Expert Response

Planting the tomatoes that early this year can stunt or even kill them without good protection. The purpling is a sign of a stressed out plant. Most of our area can only plant tomatoes out after all May frosts or even nights in the 30s.

Hi Patricia,

Thank you for the information.

Do you recommend anything specific for helping the plants when they are stressed? Perhaps a cover to help keep them warm?

Definitely covering the plants with a row cover or
wall o water works well. We'll have a hot spell coming soon, so be sure to adjust when that arrives.
