Serviceberry tree(s) for Woodbury #870578

Asked May 29, 2024, 12:04 PM EDT

Looking for tree for N side of house--lots of shade; see photo--and saw UMn recommendation for serviceberries. No rush to get big trees soon; I just want a plan. 1. If I want fruit, do I need to plant 2+ serviceberries? If so, how close to plant them? How close to house? 2. Any reason not to opt for larger (Princess Diana) variety? 3. Get bare root or pot? Any recommended suppliers? 4. For best results, defer to next spring? Thanks!

Expert Response

Thanks for the questions. Princess Diana serviceberry is a good choice for your site. Its mature width is in the range of 20 feet, so I would away from the house as far as practical. You only need one tree for pollination. Potted tree are readily available throughout the season, so very convenient. Bare root may be cheaper but not as convenient because only available in the spring. Needs to be planted as soon as purchased. May only be available online rather than at local nurseries, I don't know for certain. As a representative of the University I cannot recommend specific retailers. I do know of a wonderful, family owned nursery not far to the south you near Carpenter Nature Center.
