Asked May 29, 2024, 10:53 AM EDT

we have spots on our tomato leaves. wondering if it's bugs or fungus and how to get rid of it. also noticed insects all over my lavender - looks like baby praying mantises - thought they were good for plants, eat other insects, but wanted to make sure that's what it is and if it's ok. thanks!!!

Hi,

The spots on the tomatoes look like flea beetle feeding which is a common garden pest this time of year. There is an additional webpage you can visit on the link provided which will take you to further information. Flea beetles tend to love the nightshade family plants (potatoes, eggplant, tomatoes and peppers). You could monitor symptoms to see if they are getting worse since healthy and vigorously growing plants can usually withstand and outgrow any damage. Heavy feeding can produce low yields though. You can also use diatomaceous earth dusted on the leaves and around the plant to deter the beetles as well as other management tips listed in the links.

The insect is a praying mantis nymph. At this size it is difficult to tell which species it could be. We commonly have Chinese praying mantis and Carolina praying mantis in Maryland. Mantis species are beneficial predatory insects that are good to keep around the garden to help with pest control!
