Hi,
This looks like a red maple and we think it is anthracnose, which is a common fungal problem to many shade trees. They are host specific so the anthracnose from this maple could only potentially infect other maples, not other shade trees.
Most of the time the trees can recover if they are not stressed by another issue. We have had a wet rainy and cool spring, so the perfect conditions for anthracnose. There isn't much you can do since the spores easily travel in wind or rain drops splashing on the ground. You can try to rake up any fallen leaves to help reduce the fungal spores that will over winter in the leaf little, but it isn't a fool-proof method in preventing it. In years that infection is really bad, it may defoliate the tree by early summer but many times the tree can recover and leaf out again before the fall.
