Thorny Wineberry #870557

Asked May 29, 2024, 10:34 AM EDT

Any advice for removing wild wineberry. I have about a quarter acre of wooded area on my property. I would like to introduce more native plants. Thanks

Expert Response

As a tough perennial plant, Wineberry can take time to eradicate, likely requiring multiple applications of systemic herbicide (which foliage absorbs and moves into roots). You can look for a product that includes Wineberry on the list of weeds controlled (ideally) and follow its directions for use. The chemical will need time to move throughout the plant before it will start to cause decline symptoms.

If you prefer to remove them without herbicide, they will need to be repeatedly cut down to the ground until the roots exhaust their stored energy supply that's fueling regrowth. Removal of any new foliage that appears after each pruning must be prompt to keep the plant weakened. We can't predict how long this process will take, but it might be several months or even over a year to fully eradicate them.
