Hi,
Plant identification from photos can be a bit tricky if identifying features are not part of the photo. Since you have access to the plant, here are two links to help you determine in identity of the plant.
First is from the US Forest Service, "American Black Elderberry". This page has good photos and a careful description of the flowers and leaves for identification purposes.
The second link is to OSU Landscape Plants, for "Common Elderberry". I think between the two sources, you should be able to confidently confirm or deny that the flowers in question elderberry flowers.
