Weeping White Pine losing a LOT of needles in spring. Does not normally do that. #870540

Asked May 29, 2024, 7:57 AM EDT

I have this 40 year old weeping white pine that always sheds it's needles in the fall - which it did, very typically, last fall. This spring (now) it is losing a LOT of dead needles. Should I be concerned? Should I have it checked out for a disease? It LOOKS healthy to me.

Expert Response

Are the needles browning now, or did they turn yellow or brown in the fall, and they are just dropping now? If they changed color in the fall and are just dropping now, that is less concerning than if green needles are actively yellowing currently. I can't tell from the photo, but can you tell which years' needles are dropping? This year's new needles and last year's needles should still be green. If they are not, you will want to have the tree evaluated. It is normal for anything older to drop, though that would generally be in the fall, as you noted.
