Boring beetle problem #870469

Asked May 28, 2024, 4:06 PM EDT

I would like to know how to treat my very large pine tree for boring beetles.

Anne Arundel County Maryland

Expert Response

Wood-boring insects can't always be treated, as often they are beyond the reach of insecticides; it depends on where in the wood structure they are feeding, which relies on knowing which borer species is present. We recommend having a certified arborist evaluate the tree (seek out one with diagnostic skills or familiarity with pines and their ailments), especially since some chemicals (if warranted to prevent future beetle generations) are only legal for certified pesticide applicators to purchase and use.
