Diluted coffee as slug deterrent/pesticide? #870454
Asked May 28, 2024, 3:09 PM EDT
I recently read an article that stated research has shown that a 9:1 ratio of water to coffee will help to manage pests. I've not seen any research about it. What's the scoop?

Thank you for your question, Alice. Here's what Linda Brewer says: https://today.oregonstate.edu/news/used-appropriately-coffee-grounds-improve-soil-and-kill-slugs
Good luck!

Hi, thanks for the reply. However, I did see that article. I have not seen any research to back it up. Has Linda offered that information

Kym has retired. Based on the information she provided for the Oregonian, I assume that it was based on accurate research from Linda. If you want research-based data, I suggest that you contact Linda directly to see whose research she relies upon: <personal data hidden>
Welcome!
I will let you know about her response. I know Rory McDonell is researching using essential oils, especially thyme, spearmint, and clove as slug and snail repellents. I have not seen any published research or know of any studies being conducted about using a coffee/water solution. I can't tell clients coming into our Plant Clinic about the coffee solution unless I have research-based information.

I understand that, Alice. In the +20,000 answers I've provided in Ask Extension, I always try to give a link to a site:edu or site:gov source and, depending upon reliability, site:org. But sometimes, it's best to send the client to the person or institution purporting to have the "evidence".

Hi, Kristena--I remember seeing your name a lot when I was fielding questions on Ask An Expert. After they switched to the new platform back in the early 20s, it wasn't supported well here, and it just petered out. Too bad--I really enjoyed the question wrangling, especially the plant ID questions. Thank you for your response. I hope I hear from Linda, and I'll let you know what she says.

Here is an article that may help provide science-based evidence: https://digitalcommons.unl.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?context=icwdm_usdanwrc&article=1465
Yes, that's the article I saw years ago. As far as I know, it's just an article discussing some initial inquiries and short experiments. That's how the scientific process begins. I don't think they ever pursued it. It's a darned shame--it would have been such a simple solution to slugs in our gardens.
I wonder if no one continued the research because of funding problems.
Thanks!
