jumping worms in mulch and compost #870437

Asked May 28, 2024, 1:55 PM EDT

How do I ensure that mulch and compost I buy is free from jumping worms and their cocoons? I found a spot in my garden that I believe has some jumping worms..what can I do to prevent spread? or mitigate soil quality degradation. I have already read the info available from MN DNR and u of mn extension. I am surprised that these resources only talk about identification and negative effects.

Hopefully you don't have jumping worms, but here is a good article about managing them - https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/Invasives/fact/jumpingWorm

As you can see, there are methods of control.  Buy only compost and mulch that has been treated to a temperature of at least 105F.  Make your own compost.  For other treatment methods, see https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/Invasives/fact/jumpingWorm

These articles contain several tips for preventing spread and killing the worms.  Good luck
