Cherry tree leaf drop #870433

Asked May 28, 2024, 1:46 PM EDT

My Cherry tree is dropping a lot of leaves lately. I live in Beaverton and thought we have had plenty of rain this spring. Thanks.

Thank you for your question.  There are several causes for early leaf drop, including bacterial and fungal infections; nutrient and water issues;  and some insect infestations.  It would be helpful to have clear, close up photos of the leaves--top and underside--to search for clues.  Can you provide more information?  Thanks!

Here are the front and back of a good example of the leaves that have fallen off.

Thank you!  I believe your tree is infected with this fungus:  https://pnwhandbooks.org/plantdisease/host-disease/cherry-prunus-spp-leaf-spot

The fungicides marked with "H" are available to homeowners.  Apply per label directions.  At least as importantly, rake up and dispose of any leaves with spots.  Keeping them near the tree over the winter will ensure that the fungus continues to infect the tree.  Good luck!
