What type of ant is this? #870413

Asked May 28, 2024, 12:36 PM EDT

We have a large colony of ants in our yard. It’s roughly a two foot square spot in the south yard. The ants are black. I have attached some photos. What should we do about them?

Expert Response

I cannot enlarge the photo with any clarity to identify the specific ants you have but they most probably are Cornfield or Field ants.  They do not do any damage but if they are a problem for you, the best solution would be to bait the area with poison granules that are meant to be brought back to the nest as food.  It may take a while and you may have to do it more than once.  https://extension.umn.edu/insects-infest-homes/ants
