Black Mulberry Tree? #870408

Asked May 28, 2024, 12:10 PM EDT

Will you confirm if these are black mulberries, please?

Prince George's County Maryland

Expert Response

They are mulberries, yes, but they are actually White Mulberry (Morus alba), an invasive tree in North America that has spread across much of the continent. Red Mulberry (Morus rubra) is our local native species (which can be found over the Eastern half of the U.S.), though it's fairly rare to encounter one given the abundance of White Mulberry in developed areas. Black Mulberry (Morus nigra) is another non-native mulberry species in the U.S., though not found in Maryland.

Perfect, thanks! Just confirming these plants are fine for human consumption.
