Rocks around tree base #870374

Asked May 28, 2024, 9:46 AM EDT

Hi, I've noticed large river rocks, about 4-5 inches in diameter, piled about 1-2 feet high around the base of the mature landscaping trees in the front of our building. My understanding is that tree trunks should be mulched flush with the ground and that nothing should be piled around the trunks above the soil line. Am I correct, should we move the rocks away from the tree trunks, and can you provide appropriate instruction or a photo to guide us? Thank you!

Hi Shawn,

Yes, you should move the rocks away from the tree trunks or have the landscaping company do it. Ideally all rocks would be removed. See below explanations.

River rocks piled 1-2 feet high around tree trunks is not a good idea at all. Since these are mature trees it is a little better as they shade they rocks preventing them from heating up too much. I am including links to several articles indicating how rocks act like heat islands and prevent trees from thriving.  https://www.johnson.k-state.edu/lawn-garden/agent-articles/miscellaneous/rock%20mulch%20a%20solution%20or%20a%20problem.html and https://extension.unl.edu/statewide/dodge/mulch-and-hot-weather/.

Mulch, especially rock mulch should not be piled 1-2 feet high. As the above University of Nebraska article indicates, the depth of mulch should be no more than 2-4 inches. Also, mulch should not be spread all the way to trunk but instead stop 2-3 inches away from it. The root flare of a tree trunk should be visible. Your are correct that mulch should be level with the surrounding ground. This article has taken a tongue in cheek approach to what we call mulch volcanoes. https://bygl.osu.edu/index.php/node/2347 The very last picture shows rocks used as mulch, although not as large as you describe in your note. The article has more pictures of how not to do it and the result of mulching incorrectly, but it also clearly identifies proper mulching.

I hope this is useful.
