After the storm; hundreds of tiny things left behind #870366

Asked May 28, 2024, 9:01 AM EDT

I live in Rosedale, 21237. Yesterday's storm left behind hundreds of these tiny "things" that look similar to maggots; however they don't move. I'm wondering if these could be the tiniest of pinecones. We've lived in this house for almost 20 years and have never seen this. Any help is appreciated.

Expert Response

These are not maggots or any type of insect. They are definitely some type of plant material -- possibly small pine cones. With yesterday's very strong storms, they could have blown in from afar. We can say for sure, though, that they are not insects and don't look like anything of concern. You can sweep them away.

Hello again.  I was just out in front of my house and when the wind blew hard,  they seemed to be coming from a mulberry tree.  Does that help to clarify what it is?  This tree has been here longer than me and this is the first time I've noticed it.
Thanks again for your help.

Ah, yes, good detective work! They could be young mulberry fruits. Mulberries are developing their fruits now and in some locations are already ripening.

I have ripe mulberrys falling everywhere, including on my new sidewalk.   Dear God, I hope this isn't a sign of a thousand more mulberrys.  LOL

Thank you

Hello again. One of my colleagues saw primorial pine cones on the ground yesterday evening and they looked just like what you had submitted. There are small appendages on the one end of the cone that look like bud scales. They came from a white pine tree. Mulberries fruits would be more fleshy and don't have a bud scale at one end. Do you have a white pine nearby?

Christa
I know that my neighbor has a couple of pine trees.  I'm not sure if there's a white pine.  I'll try to find out.
Thank you so much for the follow-up.

Hello again...I was able to get a picture of a pine that towers above the mulberry tree.  I used the PictureThis app and it's an Eastern White Pine.
Mystery solved.
Thanks again,
