After stump removal #870339

Asked May 27, 2024, 9:52 PM EDT

We just had a large ash tree removed and the stump ground out. That space is now more bowl shaped rather than the mound I had expected. I realize it will take time before the wood chips have decomposed, but at some point I would like to have the area more level with the surrounding lawn. Is it a good idea to add topsoil right away or allow for settling to take place first? Should I spread grass seed now as I wait for the area to settle? I know there will have to be some amount of topsoil in place for grass seed to take. Thank you.

Expert Response

Good Morning Judy,

Thank you for contacting the U of M Extension Service.

You could remove an amount of wood chips and find a use for them elsewhere in your yard. This would help the soil you put in the hole to settle. It may take a few years for the wood chips and roots to decompose. The more chips you remove, and the more soil you add,  will make the spot more solid and stable. I would water it well and let it settle for a day or two before you add the lawn seed.

Good Luck!
