Dropping tips of some elderberry branches #870302

Asked May 27, 2024, 4:06 PM EDT

We have three elderberry bushes that have been growing beautifully in a sunny location. The bushes continue to look healthy however approx. two weeks ago I noticed the tip of a branch was drooped over. I thought perhaps my husband accidentally hit it with the top of the lawn mower (not the blade part) so I just snipped it off. Now, I am noticing more tips ( will vary from one to three inches long) that are drooping. What is potentially happening? We had an underground sprinkling system installed last summer, did something damage the root system although the bushes remained healthy throughout the summer and fall. The bushes are at the end of a small patio on which I did use ant poison which I have used every year since the bushes were planted, is that possibly causing it. All bushes have new growth on them. Help?? Thank You

Hello,

Thanks for reaching out! If possible, a few photos may help us identify any issues. Have you noticed any damage, such as holes, on the stems? Do you see any insects (including caterpillars), holes, or discoloration on the leaves?  Here is a nice article from the Michigan State University Extension with possible causes related to insects or fungi: https://www.canr.msu.edu/news/elderberries_an_edible_landscape_plant

If you are only noticing drooping tips, it is possible that the plant is either overly wet or in need of water. You may wish to check the soil underneath the bushes to make sure it is moist, but not too wet.

Feel free to send photos or more information, and we can continue to look into what may be the cause!
