Peony disease? #870291

Asked May 27, 2024, 3:06 PM EDT

I recently moved my peonies to a new location, and they have developed blackening of the stem and leaves. The peonies are near but not in the dripline of a walnut tree. I don't know how I know if the blackening is a fungus, parasite, or juglone. Once identified, I also need to know the best approach to treating the problem. As far as I can tell, the blackening is only affecting the smallest of the stems for now. Thank you!

Diane, Thank you for the question. Peonies are susceptible to a couple of different blights brought on by cool wet weather. Iowa State has good information on growing peonies and managing diseases. Also, peonies are susceptible to juglone so that may be a factor too. Particularly sensitive to juglone are ornamentals such as lilacs, peonies, rhododendrons and azaleas. The symptoms in plants sensitive to juglone range from stunting, yellowing, to partial or total wilting, to complete death. Does not appear that your peony has these symptoms.
