Hydrangeas Not Blooming #870231
Asked May 27, 2024, 8:25 AM EDT
I have two hydrangeas that are not blooming whatsoever. They appear to be healthy and disease-free as far as I can tell (see image). They were planted by the previous owner so I don't have information on specific type, etc. The odd thing is that they bloomed in the summer of 2022 but not at all last summer and so far not this year. I am wondering if I made a mistake by cutting them back in the fall. Should they not be cut back in the fall like other perennials? Is there anything I can do at this point to encourage some blooms? Thanks much.

The hydrangea may have been forced to bloom when it was initially purchased. It can take a hydrangea a couple of years to become fully established. If you provide the necessary care and plant it in the right location, it might just take time and patience to see it bloom. I've attached a file on pruning and caring for hydrangea. Depending on the types of plants you have, they may require pruning at different times. See the attached document and the link provided for more information.
