Magnolia scale transferrable to new tree? #870195
Asked May 26, 2024, 6:23 PM EDT
Hi,
After 2-1/2 years of attempting to fight the scale on our magnolia tree we gave up and pulled it out this week.
Now we’re looking at planting a Flamingo Dappled Willow in its place.
Do we need to wait? Or do something to the soil so the scale doesn’t just attack this trees too? We have not yet purchased this tree so could choose something else if need be.
Thank you!

Expert Response
Hi,
Sorry to hear about your magnolia tree. So many Minnesotans have lost magnolia trees due to scale.
Scale needs a host in order to survive; it cannot survive in the soil. With the removal of your infested magnolia tree you should be able to plant a new tree.
Good luck!
