What would a good native large tree be for my front yard with a clay like soil be. The last tree roots started to grow out of the ground so I want something that can tackle the clay. Zip 55375

Expert Response

Here are three good choices for a shade tree. All three have a mature height of 60 feet.

Hackberry  Celtis occidentalis. Large shade tree for tough sites.

Honeylocust Gleditsia triacanthos inermis  Thornless varieties are best; rapid grower; provides filtered shade.

Bur oak Quercus macrocarpa  Easy to grow; drought tolerant; long-lived.

Thanks for the question.
