Nandina #870149

Asked May 26, 2024, 1:05 PM EDT

We have a large bush in the front of our house that I'm pretty sure is nandina. I've been thinking too cut off the berries, so the birds don't eat them, what I'm wondering is whether the berries can be composted, or would that poison the compost, too? I'm using PG's compost program. Thank you.

Expert Response

Hi,

If you are sending to the county landfill it should get hot enough to kill the seeds. It is probably the safest way to dispose of them to help eliminate waste. A home compost bin will most likely not get hot enough to kill many weed seeds.

If you are having doubts then we would say to just add to the trash.
