Seeding/Re-seeding native grasses in Evergreen #870133

Asked May 26, 2024, 11:00 AM EDT

I am NOT a gardener and appreciate any and all advice! We live in north Evergreen (at about 7500 feet elevation.) We would like to keep the vegetation in our yard as wild, wildlife-friendly, and native as possible. We will be disturbing the ground on a south-facing slope (probably with poor soil) to put some steps in a steep area. Can you provide any guidance on how we can best re-seed disturbed soil with native, drought-tolerant grasses and discourage opportunistic weeds? Thank you for any advice you have!

Expert Response

Good morning!

Sorry for the delayed response I was out of town last week.

How steep is the slope? One of the things to think about if it is very steep is planting some natives that are larger to help with the runoff and start establishing them quicker.

My concern with seeding a steeper area is the seeds need to be moist in order to germinate - if you were watering them consistently the seeds could potentially all wash away. If you were to plant larger plants to start off with, they would be able to get established faster and cover up some of that exposed soil.

The most challenging thing with open soil is weeds will find it and start to grow there - planting the larger plants will also make it easier for you to see where the weeds are germinating and remove them asap!

The Jefferson County Master Gardeners have a demonstration garden in Evergreen of some great plants that will do well in your area! If you are interested in visiting it and chatting with a master gardener, they will be at the Evergreen Farmers market starting on June 18th and can give you a tour of the garden!

Here is a little more information on some natives. There is information for each region and I would suggest looking at the Front Range and Mountain region.

Thanks so much for reaching out!

Thanks so much for your response!  I will definitely visit the farmer’s market in Evergreen and talk with the Master Gardeners there.

Our slope isn’t super steep, and I’m hoping the seed will stay put the way we’ve built the steps.  (Photo attached.)  I purchased some “Montane Short Grasses” seed from https://www.westernnativeseed.com and hope the grass will fill-in between each step.  We’re doing our best to water just a little at-a-time in hopes of not washing the seed down the hill.  I also hope to fill in some of the bare spots (due to voles) with grasses and wildflowers.

Any and all advice is appreciated!  Thank you!!

Joan

What a beautiful space!

That seems like a great plan of action for your space.

They will be at the Farmer's market starting next week.
