Street Tree #870098

Asked May 25, 2024, 7:42 PM EDT

We have a street tree that died and need to replace it. We want to choose the right type of tree that will grow to the appropriate size and have a root structure that doesn’t damage sidewalks. We also want it to be a tree that thrives in the Willamette Valley. Do you have an arborist who can send a list a suitable trees to us?

Dear Heidi,

Thank you for contacting us about choosing a street tree. You might contact  your local conservation district or municipality which should have suggestions for street trees.

Here is a list from the city of Salem that may be helpful:

This list from the City of Eugene may also be useful:

I'd like to suggest that you also consider the litter created by various trees. At one time, cities considered sweetgum to be a good street tree, but these produce a lot of debris.

I hope this information is helpful. If I can provide any additional information, please write again.
