What’s up with my U tree? #870088

Asked May 25, 2024, 6:23 PM EDT

Please excuse any duplication! My yew has several patches of pale yellow and brown. The rest of the tree seems to be flourishing. Please give me an idea of what might be wrong with this tree. Can I fertilize this tree? I truly want this tree to grow And look great More water?

Hello,

Well you have me rather stumped. I don't often see problems with yews. This does not look like a newly planted one.... the problem is not bad but, monitor it. Trim out the yellow branches. How long have these been in the ground ? Is it possible that the soil doesn't drain very well ? Are you on bedrock under the soil  or near a water stream or pond ?

Let me know if the yellowing continues. It may stop when the weather heats up. This is a mystery so far.

Hi again,

I have just been informed by another Master Gardner experienced with growing yews and he said it's very normal for aging yews to develop some yellow needles. They will shed these older needles, just part of the plants life cycle.
