Elm tree leaves #870073

Asked May 25, 2024, 3:11 PM EDT

I have an elm tree that should be resistant to Dutch elm disease and every year recently it has a problem with something eating the leaves. The lower leaves seem to be more vulnerable. I will send some images of the leaves. I’m hoping that you can identify the problem and a solution.

Hi Jerry,

If your tree had Dutch elm disease you'd see large areas of dead leaves in the canopy. These look like seasonal insect damage.

The first two photos appear to be leaf galls, which are created by tiny insects that nest in the bumps. This is a cosmetic issue and does not threaten the health of the tree.

The third photo looks like elm leafminer damage. Again the damage is irritating but rarely affects the tree's health.

Using chemicals for these issues is not usually recommended because the damage is to tree appearance, not health.

Good luck.
