Asparagus Beatles #870063

Asked May 25, 2024, 1:41 PM EDT

I discovered asparagus beetles when I picked my asparagus today. I have not noticed them in the past. What is the best way to control them, get rid of them? And is the asparagus safe to eat with the black spots on them?

I am giving you a link to our information on these pests.  Check the spots to make sure they are damage spots and not eggs.  If they are damage spots, you could cut that off with a knife and the rest of the spear would be fine.  https://extension.umn.edu/yard-and-garden-insects/asparagus-beetles

I am wondering about eating the asparagus spears. I’ve noticed little black spots on them. Should I just discard the asparagus this year until the Beatles are gone?

As I responded in my previous post, check to see if the spots are damage from eating or eggs.  If eggs, dispose of that spear.  If damage, you can skin off that portion and eat the rest.  They have not poisoned the asparagus.
