Cross pollination of pepper plants #870041

Asked May 25, 2024, 10:11 AM EDT

Hello, Do pepper plants cross-pollenate? If so does it effect the taste of the peppers? I have planted a red bell pepper within three feet of Jalapeno plants. Also, I just acquired an Shishito pepper and wondering if I should plant it in a different garden bed. Thank you

Expert Response

Hi Barbara...peppers usually peppers self-pollinate, although cross-pollination can occur.  If this does occur, however, it would not impact your current crop - the result would only become apparent if you saved seeds from the result of such a cross-pollination and planted them next year.  You can safely plant all your peppers in the same location.  Best,
