These are older trees that all of a sudden died this spring. We are on 3 acres wooded acres with pine, some oak and fir. They appeared healthy all this time. Trunks are approx 2 feet around. Why are they dying?

Expert Response

Hello, we have several different things affecting madrone, but most important this spring are foliage diseases that basically kill all the older leaves.  In many cases, this does not affect the buds, so the tree will flush out with green foliage in the spring.

There are a few canker diseases (fungi that kill the bark) that are common on madrone, but these seem to be most important in the shade.  Madrone prefers full sunlight.

Here is a link to a nice guide to madrone issues.  I hope it is helpful.
