Asked May 24, 2024, 7:16 PM EDT

I saw an orange colored bee in the mulch by my mailbox this morning. What kind of bee is it and is it dangerous?

Carroll County Maryland

Expert Response

This is a Southern yellowjacket(Vespula squamosa). They are a type of social wasp, which means they live in a community with other members of their species. They can sting, but only will do so if they feel threatened. If you see a nest nearby, it is best to avoid it and leave them alone. Our recently updated page about Social Wasps provides more information about them and how to avoid conflicts with them and their nest.
