Broadleaf Enchanter's Nightshade #869993

Asked May 24, 2024, 5:42 PM EDT

I have lots of this on the edge of my woods and in a bed or two. Should I leave it? Or is it considered a weed? In which case I'll pull it out. many thanks

Expert Response

Broad-leaved enchanter's nightshade (Circaea canadensis) is native to the eastern United States and almost all of Maryland (except for a couple of counties on the eastern shore). It is quite common in forests and forest edges. It's not considered a weed. It is a perennial plant, so it will persist from year to year and will spread if conditions are right for it. Management of it is really your choice: for example, you may want to pull/dig it out of garden beds, but leave it in its natural habitat in the woods.
