Green Ash leaf curl #869970

Asked May 24, 2024, 4:11 PM EDT

Green ash tree has leaf curling I am not seeing any other things that took odd on it except the leaves in this one branch. It did also just lose a large branch in recent storms but I checked this one it absolutely should be getting nutrients. Also how can I check for EAB before they burrow out here real soon in case it's that.

Expert Response

Alright it's spreading but I finally found a thing that seems noteworthy.

I sincerely hope this tree is savable she's the last female in town except maybe some of the sprouts I relocate to better locations in the yard but this tree supposedly predates even the Dutch elm invasion.

It seems so far despite high density whatever it is so far only the wild grapes are susceptible and affected.

Thanks for the question. Most likely the leaf curl you are seeing is the result of drought.  It's not a big concern. It's not a disease. No need to worry but water the tree during dry periods.

EAB is prevalent in Freeborn County, so you need to be concerned. History tells us that if you have an ash tree it will eventually get EAB. Once a tree has EAB it is too late. If the tree is of great value and you don't want to lose it to EAB, then it can be treated with an insecticide to prevent infestation.

There are many causes of leaf spots. Here is a link for more information: https://extension.umn.edu/plant-diseases/leaf-spot-diseases-trees-and-shrubs

The maple leaf with bumps are galls. They are quite common and harmless. Here is more info on galls: https://extension.umn.edu/yard-and-garden-insects/insect-and-mite-galls

I hope this helps.
