Peony inquiry #869952

Asked May 24, 2024, 2:14 PM EDT

I have one of my peony varieties that is getting within days of harvest and the stem is bursting apart right by the bud. I was wondering if this is due to weather (we have had a warm wet spring, resulting in earlier then normal season), or something else? So far I'm only seeing it on one variety, 'Many Happy Returns'. Ideally if I can find the cause I would like to prevent it if possible. On the off chance it has to do with the chemical products we apply, we have sprayed beneficial nematodes and Serenade fungicide, and will be applying Conserve SC VERY soon. Thanks for your time and consideration! LeAnne Lund

Expert Response

Thank you for your question.

The “Many Happy Returns” is a hybrid peony that was developed in 1986. As you probably know, it possesses a double flower that is quite striking. At this time, I cannot provide a good explanation for your stem observation. There is nothing that I can find in the gardening literature to shed light on things. I would suggest that you directly contact Hollingsworth Peonies in Maryville, Missouri. They were the originators of this specific variety. See:

Hopefully they will be able to provide you an answer. Thanks for consulting us.
