Stressed crabapple - what's going on? #869936

Asked May 24, 2024, 12:33 PM EDT

This year our newly leafed-out crabapple tree shows signs of stress/disease (picture). Many new leaves are wilted and discolored looking. Growth in the tree is sparse. There's a small hole, about 0.5 cm deep at the base (picture) and several holes in a stem about chest height (picture).   What to do?

Thanks!

Expert Response

Hello Hans...from the pictures you sent, it would seem that your crabapple tree is being attacked by some sort of leaf borer, which are quite common on young apple and crabapple trees.  To get a more specific ID on the pest and identify treatment options, I have referred your email to our Diagnosticians, who will contact you with further information.  Take care,
