Saving an Oak Tree #869925

Asked May 24, 2024, 12:00 PM EDT

Hello! I have an oak tree in my front yard. I estimate that the oak is probably at least 80-100 years old judging by the size. Last November, I called a professional arborist company to look at the tree since my husband noticed that there were branches that did not have leaves on them. The company said they would need to come back in the spring to look at the canopy in full bloom but suspected the root cause could be drought. They recently re-inspected the canopy and said the tree was "on the fence" and they could proceed with treatments but they could not guarantee anything. I would prefer to save the oak due to its age. However, I am a little concerned that the company did not identify any possible reasons for whey the oak is dying such as insect infestation, soil is not fertilized enough, etc. Do you think it would be worth getting a second opinion about the oak and if it could be saved? I greatly appreciate your thoughts on this!

Good Morning Marsha,

Thank you for contacting the U of M Extension Service.

First, was the professional arborist "certified"? Here is a link about hiring a tree care professional: https://extension.umn.edu/planting-and-growing-guides/how-hire-tree-care-professional

The drought we've have the past several years has had an effect on the trees. It takes years for the trees to react to the drought. Was the oak watered at all?

Here are some oak disease links to consider: https://extension.umn.edu/plant-diseases/anthracnose-trees-and-shrubs

Here is a link about oak wilt: https://extension.umn.edu/plant-diseases/oak-wilt-minnesota

Here is oak wilt from the MN Dept of Natural Resources: https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/treecare/forest_health/oakwilt/index.html

It is not a black and white issue whether your tree is declining from drought or a disease.

We are volunteers who answer questions online. I would rely on the advice of a certified arborist.

Good Luck!
