Heavenly Bamboo #869914

Asked May 24, 2024, 11:11 AM EDT

Former owners also planted running bamboo, which we have worked hard to eradicate. We've been generally successful, and we get busy digging whenever we see new shoots. Nandina Domestica has alsobeen planted on my property on the Central Coast. It appears to have no runners and is a beautiful, colorful, hardy plant. I've learned that it is not really a bamboo, but an evergreen. I'd like to plant it in a couple more spots, but don't want a problem with my HOA, if anyone should know its familiar name. Is this an ok plant for this area?

Expert Response

Heavenly bamboo is not currently on the Oregon Department of Agriculture noxious weed list - https://www.oregon.gov/oda/programs/Weeds/OregonNoxiousWeeds/Pages/AboutOregonWeeds.aspx

It is, however, considered toxic to dogs & cats that may eat/chew its leaves - https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants/heavenly-bamboo

It is also reportedly toxic to birds that may consume its berries - https://delta.audubon.org/news/nandina-berries-kill-birds
If you don't remove the Heavenly Bamboo, please remove the berry branches.

Please consider planting native Oregon shrubs instead of Heavenly Bamboo.   Here are some ideas for native choices:
