Leaf browning and cupping #869896

Asked May 24, 2024, 9:58 AM EDT

Hi there, I have a River birch clumped tree that was planted last fall. It dropped it leaves early and I think it was because I forgot to water it once after planting and it was drying out. When the leaves started to bud I noticed they look small and are brown on the edges. Is this from lack of water or something else?

Expert Response

Yes, Signs of drought stress include leaf wilting, curling, discoloration and early leaf drop. Make certain that the tree gets plenty of water when the top 3 inches of soil is dry, especially if you have sandy soil.  Too much water is also stressful so allow the soil to dry out somewhat before watering especially if you have heavy clay soil.

Do remove the white tubes for the summer at which time they are harmful. Do put them back on for the winter.

Good luck!
