Curling, dying plants after application #869875

Asked May 24, 2024, 7:00 AM EDT

I had tree and shrub application at end of April and shortly after the plants began to curl. It was said it was freeze damage but iit has been warmer than ever this april and may. My plant app says disease. Now the dapple willow leaves are about 70% brown. I would really appreciate if someone to identify (an inspection would be great if possible) the problem so I can find a definitive solution to save this 25 year old once gorgeous tree/bush. The rest of the plants seem to be improving with fertilization but the willow looks worse every day. Thanks so much-

Expert Response

Good afternoon and thank you for your question.  It is possible that what you are seeing is frost damage, some plants are quite sensitive.  I am in the Columbus area and have had some frost damage to some of my hydrangeas, lilacs and other ornamentals.  It is also possible that it is herbicide injury. Herbicide drift typically happens if volatile products where applied on a very hot and/or windy day.  Do you know what they applied?  Unfortunately, we are not equipped to come out to do an inspection.  I would encourage you to submit a sample to the Plant and Pest Diagnostic Clinic where an expert is better equipped to accurately diagnose the damage you are seeing.  Here is information on submitting a sample:  https://ppdc.osu.edu/submit-sample

I wish you all the best.
