When can I plant peppers and tomatoes this year? #869859
Asked May 23, 2024, 10:41 PM EDT
Hello Extension!!
First, thank you for all you do. Second, while I know that the summer is predicted to be unseasonably hot, it is cold right now! When should we plant our peppers and tomatoes? We have very healthy starts and we have steel planters.

Expert Response
Thank you for your question, Rachel. Before you apply the trowel, pull out a thermometer and measure the temperature of your garden soil. Tomatoes (and peppers and eggplant) won't thrive unless the temperature is at least 60 degrees. Here is a handy guide to growing tomatoes: https://extension.oregonstate.edu/sites/default/files/documents/12281/growingtomatoes0.pdf
