Downy Serviceberry suddenly sick #869856

Asked May 23, 2024, 9:34 PM EDT

I purchased 2 downy serviceberries in the spring of 2023 and planted them in a wooded area ( dappled shade/ part shade). They did well last year and leafed out this spring and looked very healthy until just the past week. One looks normal the other appears to be dying. Should I rip it our, or is there any chance for recovery? It has been suggested to me that this is the wrong type of serviceberry to plant in Howard County. I purchased at a native plant sale.

Howard County Maryland

Expert Response

Unfortunately this tree does not look like it is going to recover.

We can't tell from these symptoms the exact cause, but it could possibly be a root issue.

Maybe it is too wet or shady in that location for it? Downy Serviceberry - Amelanchier arboria  are fine to plant throughout Maryland. They are native to to eastern coast of the US from Maine to Alabama.

They prefer full sun or at least mostly sunny and well draining soil so if it pools there after a rain event then it could be too wet.

Maybe it was planted too deeply? or the roots were damaged in the process of planting.

Some plants seem to be fine after planting then something happens where it fails to get established.

If you plant again, try a location with more sun if you have one. Or we can assist with recommendations of a shady area.
