Lila hasn't bloomed for 10 years #869845

Asked May 23, 2024, 7:04 PM EDT

Hello. We bought a lilac about 10 years ago. It was blooming when we bought it but has never bloomed since. We’ve fertilized it but that hasn’t helped. In case we didn’t use the right kind, what kind would you recommend, and how often should we put it on the lilac? I’ve read that sometimes it can help to cut it down radically, such as to 6” above the ground. Would that be likely to help it bloom? If so, when should we do that? It’s about 4 ½ feet tall now. In March and April it gets 6 hours or more of direct sunlight. After some surrounding trees leaf out, the lilac is shaded some, but I think it probably gets at least 5 hours of direct sun each day throughout the spring and sumer. We’d welcome any suggestions you have for helping it to bloom.

Expert Response

Hello,

Thanks for your question. First, stop fertilizing. Lilacs don't have a high need for fertilizer - and sometimes fertilizer pushes a lot of leafy growth at the expense of flowers.

Yes, you can do a renewal or rejuvenation pruning. Renewal pruning is removing 1/3 of the oldest branches over a period of three years. You'd cut them back the ground, within 4-6". Rejuvenation pruning is cutting back the entire shrub to 4-6" above the ground. Both of these force the shrub to sucker and push new growth.

Lilacs also bloom on wood formed the previous summer. If you prune these in spring, you might be pruning off the flower buds. Always prune lilacs in early summer after bloom.

Thank you, Alison!!  We'll try cutting it back.  Best wishes - Alice
